Private Teaching & Tutoring

1 or 2 Learners per Teacher-Tutor/Coach

Both Robert and I provide private teaching and/or tutoring and coaching.  We noticed that many online sites advertise their services as either being "teaching" or "tutoring" English.  These sites mention that the teachers are qualified individuals who can teach English properly while tutors are native speakers of English who do not have such qualifications and therefore are used only for conversational practice.  Coaching, however, is for specific tasks such as preparing for a speech, or a specific test.  Teaching usually happens mostly at lower levels, tutoring at all levels, and coaching usually at higher levels.

In our case, we are BOTH teachers and tutors or language coaches at the same.  Both Robert and I have native fluency and knowledge of the English language as well as education and experience in English language teaching (TEFL: Teaching English as a Foreign Language) and tutoring/coaching. We can help learners individually, or in pairs.  If you decide to study with a partner, you must make sure that your partner has the same language level as you.  You might want to check out the European definitions of language learning levels here.  If you don't know your levels, we would like you and your study partner (if you have one) to contact us for a FREE  15-minute Zoom, Google Hangouts, WhatsApp, or Skype video consultation/instruction session first BEFORE buying one of our discounted plans, and then to book your hours with us accordingly.  The 15-minute consultation/instruction session will determine your level as well as your partner's level (if you are studying with a partner), so that you may proceed to a specific course of study.  We are looking forward to hearing from you very soon.

SKILL PRACTICE

Listening & Speaking

This skill set combo is for those learners who want to improve their confidence in English listening comprehension and conversation.  The focus will be on listening to the teacher and/or to audio and/or video media that are readily available on the internet.  After checking the learner's listening comprehension of the material, the teacher will engage the learner in a conversation regarding the topic of this particular material.  The teacher will actively correct the learners' grammatical, vocabulary, pronunciation and intonation errors.

Reading & Writing
This skill set combo is for those learners who want to improve their confidence in English reading comprehension and writing and grammar usage.  The focus will be on reading passages that are readily available on the internet.  After checking the learner's reading comprehension of the passage, the teacher will ask the learner to write a paragraph that summarizes the passage.  Learners may also want to write opinion paragraphs based on the readings.  Paragraphs are sent to the teacher live and the teacher will then use Track Changes in the Microsoft Word program to correct the learner's writing while explaining the errors.  The teacher will actively correct the learners' grammatical, vocabulary, spelling, and punctuation errors.

Four-Skill Combination

Learners who want to polish their listening, reading, speaking and writing skills at the same time can do so by combining different skills during different tutoring/teaching sessions.  In most sessions, learners need to use at least listening, reading and speaking skills.  Writing skills are usually secondary while taking notes.

COURSE OFFERINGS

For 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or as many as 6 students per teacher!

We are offering 9 main courses that learners of all levels can enjoy either one-on-one, or with a partner and us.  For each course, R stands for Reading, W for Writing, L for Listening, and S for SpeakingPure beginners need special attention and care, which we are not able to provide in our mini school.  However, we are looking forward to teaching mid and upper Beginner learners just as much as Intermediate and Advanced learners.

1. Dictation & BookBox Inc. Tales

This is a course for beginners who want to improve their confidence in listening and spelling.  The learner needs to listen carefully and write down accurately what he/she hears.  The tutor will then ask the learner follow-up conversational questions about the dictation and the online BookBox Inc. Tales.  Intermediate and advanced learners may take this course if necessary.

2. Pronunciation Practice

This course can be taken all by itself or in conjunction with the Dictation course especially at the beginner level.  The tutor will ask the learner to read many passages out loud in order to practice the most difficult sounds in the English language as well as proper intonation.

3. Communicative Grammar

This course focuses on grammar dialogue drills in order to get the learner more comfortable with verb conjugation as well as practice of all parts of speech.  This course can be taken all by itself or in conjunction with Conversational English.

4. Writing Practice

Depending on the level of the learner, this course focuses on different parts of writing.  Beginner learners will focus on writing clear, grammatically correct sentences and short paragraphs.  Intermediate learners will focus on writing longer paragraphs and short essays.  Advanced learners will focus on writing short and long essays as well as all other types of writing if needed.  This course can be taken in conjunction with Communicative Grammar.

5. Conversational English (FREE or GUIDED)

This course focuses on social communication in the English language.  It can be a normal conversation about a specific topic, a discussion, or even a short presentation.

6. English through Culture (fairy tales, short stories, fiction & non-fiction novels, poetry, news articles, songs, movies)

This course can focus on whatever cultural form the learner wants to pursue.  For example, if the learner loves songs and movies, then the tutor can focus on these forms.  This course can be used a springboard for practicing any skill or specific topic in which the learner is interested.

7. Public Speaking Practice

This course focuses on teaching learners how to prepare for speeches and/or presentations.  Writing and speaking skills are especially important.  Learners will be expected to give short presentations as well as longer speeches in order to give them more confidence.

8. Test-Taking Practice (TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS, Cambridge, etc.)

This course focuses on test-taking skills, and should be undertaken by those learners who need practice for a specific test.  Almost all English proficiency tests have both a speaking test and a writing test in addition to the general test.

9. English for Specific Purposes (ESP)

This course depends entirely on the needs of the learner.  Learners can be older elementary school, middle school or high school students, college or university students, or even professionals from different walks of life.  Students can focus on different subjects or courses while professionals can focus on their occupational duties or professional development.
